ITALIAN FALLEN

WORKERS MEMORIAL

Italian Fallen Workers Memorial Ceremony

  • Tuesday, April 28, 3:00pm

The Consulate General of Italy and Villa Charities together with the Italian Fallen Workers Memorial Project Committee invite you to join us in honouring the memory of the thousands of Italian fallen workers.

To mark the 10th anniversary of the Italian Fallen Workers Memorial Project, the event will include a special screening of Caduti”, an original documentary by TLN Studios and a special presentation by TLN Media Group.

“Caduti” (“Fallen”) is a powerful, deeply moving documentary that sheds light on a largely untold chapter of Canadian history and the sacrifices of thousands of Italian immigrant workers who helped build Canada’s roads, railways and cities, often at the cost of their lives.

Anchored by the compelling story of activist Marino Toppan and the creation of the Italian Fallen Workers Memorial, the film traces a sweeping historical arc across the 20th century, exploring workplace tragedies, systemic injustices, and the rise of advocacy that led to meaningful change.

Both a tribute and a timely reminder, “Caduti” brings a human face to history, exploring the resilience, memory, and legacy of those who gave so much to build our country.

Screened in Italian with English subtitles.

The Italian Fallen Workers Memorial Project is a joint project of the Italian Fallen Workers Memorial Project and Villa Charities Inc., supported by the Consulate General of Italy in Toronto.

On April 28, 2016, the Committee for the Italian Fallen Workers Memorial Project, along with Villa Charities, with the support of the Consul General of Italy, and an incredible family of donors, was proud to formally unveil the Italian Fallen Workers Memorial Wall, honouring almost one thousand workers of Italian origin killed in workplace tragedies across Ontario. In 2017, almost a thousand new names were added, broadening the project to include workers of Italian origin who were killed in these terrible tragedies across our great nation, from 1900 to today. Our thanks to the Italian Fallen Workers Memorial Project Committee for their tireless efforts in bringing to light the significant contributions of these fallen workers to the social and economic growth of Canada.

In 2018, we were truly humbled and honoured that Villa Charities, along with the Committee for the Italian Fallen Workers Memorial Project and the fallen workers and their families, was presented with the Medaglia d’Oro al Merito Civile, one of the highest honours given by Italy. We have been asked to hold it in trust on behalf of the fallen workers, their families and our entire Italian-Canadian community. This is the first time ever that the honour was awarded outside of Italy. It will be held in perpetuity by Villa Charities.

You can donate in support of the Italian Fallen Workers Memorial Project and the “Finish the Memorial Project” Fundraising Campaign through Villa Charities Foundation.
